How to Price Your Cakes, Cookies, and Cupcakes Correctly One of the biggest challenges home bakers face when starting a baking business is pricing their baked goods. Many home bakers make one of 2 mistakes… they either underprice their products or over price their products. Either way you go, it’s a loss…
Hello, and welcome back to Ask Chef Letty! Today, we're talking about how to price your cakes, cookies, and cupcakes correctly. You guys, Pricing your baked goods correctly is essential to succeeding in business but with so many product variables, It can often feel overwhelming & hard to figure out.
So, what's the solution? How can you price your baked goods correctly to ensure that you're making a profit and appealing to your customer base? Truth is, it’s not a one size-fits-all answer. But, there are steps you can take to help you determine the right price for your cakes, cookies, and cupcakes. SOLVE Here are my top three tips for pricing your baked goods correctly:
Tip #1: Know Your Numbers To ensure that you're pricing your baked goods correctly, you need to know your numbers. This means calculating the cost of all your ingredients, packaging, and labor. For instance, let's say you want to make a batch of cupcakes. To calculate the cost of your ingredients, you need to know how much each ingredient costs per unit and how much you need for the recipe. So, if your recipe requires 2 cups of flour that cost $0.50 per cup, then the flour cost for that recipe would be $1. Next, calculate the cost of your packaging. This could include things like cupcake liners, boxes, and labels. You'll need to consider the cost per unit and how much you need for each batch. Finally, you need to calculate your labor costs. This includes the time you spend making the cupcakes, cleaning up, and packaging them & photographing them. Determine how much time it takes you to complete each of these tasks and how much you want to pay yourself per hour. Once you have all these costs, you can add them up to determine the total cost per batch. Divide that by the number of cupcakes in the batch to determine the cost per cupcake.
Tip #2: Do Your Research To ensure that you're pricing your baked goods competitively, it's important to do your research. Check out the prices of other home bakers in your area to get an idea of what customers are willing to pay. For example, if you're selling cupcakes in a market where other bakers are charging $3 per cupcake, you may not want to charge $5 per cupcake, as customers may see your prices as too high. On the other hand, if other bakers are charging $1 per cupcake, you may not want to charge $3 per cupcake, as you'll be pricing yourself out of the market.
Tip #3: Test Your Prices Once you have an idea of your costs and what other bakers are charging, it's time to experiment with your prices. Start by pricing your cupcakes a little higher than what you think is fair, and then adjust based on customer feedback and sales. For example, let's say you determine that your cost per cupcake is $1.50, and other bakers in your area are charging $2 per cupcake. You may want to start by pricing your cupcakes at $2.25 and see how customers respond. If you're not getting many sales, you may want to adjust your prices downward until you find the sweet spot where customers are willing to pay and you're making a profit. And that's it! By following these three tips, you'll be well on your way to pricing your baked goods correctly and building a profitable home baking business.
